Obituary of Reynoldo Garcia

Reynoldo "Ray" Garcia Ray Garcia of Salinas, died on December 7, 2008 at Natividad Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. He was 81 years old. Mr. Garcia was a native of El Paso, Texas and had resided in Salinas since 1967. Ray will be fondly remembered as "Grandpa Ray" by the many students at Santa Rita School, where he was employed as a yard supervisor in 2003. Ray was a retired service man with 23 years in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. While enlisted, he served in the Korean War and Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star Medal , the Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, P.O.W. Medal, along with other numerous decorations. He prided himself for escaping from captivity from the Koreans in 1951, bringing great credit to himself, his unit and the U.S. Army. After serving, he worked at the Fort Ord Post Exchange for over 21 years, as well as at the Defense Language Institute. He was President of the Monterey D.A.V. for 3 1/2 years. He was also a member of the Salinas Chapter #1165 Moose Lodge, the Salinas American Legion Post # 31, the Salinas V.F.W. Post #7895, the Monterey Chapter of the Purple Heart Association, and the Salinas Vietnam Memorial Committee.
